The crystal bowls that are used in sound healing today are actually a by-product of the computer industry. The original intention behind the creation of these bowls was to program and entrain the microchips that are used in computers today. Sometime during the late 1980's it was discovered that the pure rich sounds that were produced by the bowls had the ability to impact not only the physical structures in the body but also on our consciousness, and now the bowls have another very important use in the area of sound healing. Crystal bowls are made from 99.992% pure crushed quartz that are heated to about 4000 degrees in a centrifugal mould. These beautiful bowls have many physical properties; they amplify, transform, and transfer energy. They are wonderful tools for manifestation as they transmit our thought energy; the bowls become the carrier wave of our intention.

Our bodies are also crystalline in structure and using Crystal bowls for healing can have profound effects on the organs, cells, and skeletal structure; thereby bringing all systems into balance. In his groundbreaking book The Healing Power of Sound, Mitchell L. Gaynor, M.D. reports the remarkable results he has achieved in critically ill patients having them work with vocal toning and crystal bowls.

In her best selling book “The Healing Tones of Crystal Bowls”, Renee Brodie explains:

“ In our work we can show that the sound can penetrate the body, entering into the very cells, touching them and causing them to re-balance the energies within by oscillation and resonance. This comes about by the wave form bouncing out and back again as the sound continues, and we know that this actually happens, as Marcel Vogel completed much research on this scientific aspect. Thus, when the sound moves through the atmosphere, and touches us with its waveform, the cells respond by moving in a different direction. They may have been moving counter-clockwise, now they reverse and move in rhythm with the sound. This sound effect progresses by touching a cell, or several and they in turn touch other cells and so the process is repeated until all cells are moving in harmony, not only one with each other, but just as importantly, with the wave forms of the sound. Thus we have harmonics, and therefore, finally, harmony. “

Most of us are not exposed to enough pure, clear relaxing sound in our lives. We no longer get exposure to the wonderful natural sounds of nature as spend too much time indoors; we live with the noise of computers, air conditioners, and our fancy electrical appliances. As a defense mechanism, we unconsciously learn to tune out these sounds, along with traffic, crowds, and city noises, so that they do not invade into our space. Since we can't close our ears, we shut the sound out with our minds. The problem with learning to shut out sound is that we no longer hear the healthy sounds that are in our natural environment.

I spend some time with my bowls each day, playing them relaxes me in such a way that I feel all the stress melt away and my energy and thoughts become filled with light, peace and tranquility, these bowls truly are a gift to mankind. The pure waves of sound that ring from the crystal bowls are angelic and enhance our ability to listen, hear and focus. Hearing occurs with more than our ears as sound is vibration, and that vibration moves throughout our energy fields. With the crystal bowls, we can feel the sound as much as we hear it . When used with meditation, the pure crystal tones affect brain wave activity, making it easy to travel into an altered state of consciousness. As different parts of the brain are affected, it is probable that different hormones and neuro-chemicals are released that suppress pain, overcome addictions, strengthen willpower, and enhance creativity.

Crystal bowls are available in either clear or frosted crystal, the clear bowls go through an extra firing process which allows for a sweeter more bell like tone in a smaller bowl. They are a wonderful bowl to use for re structuring water. Smooth energies flow from these bowls for releasing and clearing work and can also be helpful in creating harmonious energies in the home.

The bowls are available in many different sizes from 6 to 24 inches in diameter. Crystal singing bowls can be purchased individually or in sets. T hey are digitally tuned to the different notes of the music scale, and the notes, C, D, E, F, G, A, B correspond with one's energy centres or chakras; the notes are available in sharps or flats. Each note also has a corresponding colour.

The above chart is a good place to start when choosing your bowl but it is important to keep in mind that although the crystal bowls correspond to each of the seven chakras, any bowl will affect the body when played.

You may notice the effects first in one of your chakras, but they will also travel throughout your entire energy field. While it would be wonderful to have all the notes, most people start off with one or two. This makes it easier for you in choosing the right note for your singing bowl. The bowls are beautiful to listen to, and it is your intention while playing the bowl that primarily determines the effect on your energy field.

Every tone is wonderful and effective and it is my belief that the right bowl always comes to you. The size of the bowl will be a consideration for you, depending on how you wish to you use it.

The larger bowls (16” and over) usually have a much deeper tone and a longer lasting sound and are ideal for heavy use and group entrainment. However they are not very portable and if you want to travel with your bowl you may want to consider purchasing a smaller bowl in the 10-12” range.
